Take a taxi as you leave the customs hall. As meters are
not used, agree a price before your luggage enters the vehicle.
The vehicle may be a saloon or sedan car, or a minibus. The
cost for one or two persons should be around US$60 to $70 to Negril.
Additional passengers are around $20 per person extra.
If you have already booked accommodation, ask the owner to
recommend someone; most inns, hotels etc. will arrange for you to be
collected by a reliable, licensed taxi, and probably save you $10 to
$40 on your round trip. Your driver will stop on the way to
Negril, if you like, so you can buy groceries or a crate of Red
Stripe beer. This is the recommended way to go.
A seat on a tourist bus will cost from US$20 to $25; it may stop
at several places before your destination and may not leave the
airport until it is full. The cheapest recommended method for
single travellers.
Note that the regular light aircraft service to Negril is suspended.
Shopping
Negril is coming along nicely as far as shopping is
concerned. There was a time that there was nothing much to
recommend anyone to shop here, but, in addition to little shops dotted
along the various roads, the following are worth a visit.
Hidden in Sunshine Plaza, just out of town on the West End Road,
is an attractive craft market that most visitors miss. It is
good for art, clothing and craftwork.
Time Square is an eclectic collection of attractive shops in a
modern setting about half a mile from town on the beach road.
Nearing completion at this time is what appears to be
competition for Time Square opposite Negril Tree House, about one
and a quarter miles further from town than Time Square. It
will be conveniently within walking distance from the romantic
lodges of CocoLaPalm, Charela Inn, Barry's Cabins, Secrets, Firefly
and Crystal Waters.
There are several supermarkets and chemists' shops (pharmacies)
in or near town.
Banks and A.T.M. Machines
Service can be very slow at the two banks in town, but
ATM machines are appearing in convenient locations. Licensed money
changers (Cambios) are also available and some of these are located at
the larger hotels and open to the public. Most business places accept
US$ but may not be able to give change in that currency. Only a
few accept £ or Euro.
